A Lit Life

Bookology Book Lists

What is Bookology?

Books and reading have the power to transform our lives. We meet new friends, travel to locations, experience new perspectives and learn valuable life lessons with each turn of the page. And, when we explore the themes of the book in our own lives, from love and relationships to baking and gardening, magic happens. The book leaves us a better person than when we started.

Notebooks and writing act as catalysts for reflection and change. When our head and hearts find the page, we can see things, acknowledge things and change things we couldn’t see clearly before. Writing on the page can literally help us rewrite our lives.

Here are some clear definitions:

Bookology is a concept I created to represent my deep love of reading and writing and the benefits they bring.

Bookology is the study of books and reading and notebooks and writing, mixed with mindfulness and creativity to bring you restorative reading and writing.

A bookologist is person with the art and skill needed to prepare bookish and notebookish experiences for others….me!

Oh, this book is a battle cry to readers who feel Oh, this book is a battle cry to readers who feel tired, overwhelmed or overworked. It’s for readers who hold it in, bite their tongue and second guess themselves. It’s for anyone who needs a break, wants to pivot or just needs space to reflect. In other words, everyone. =)

Four friends meet up for a short break away and are reminded of the power of friendship and connection. As the wine is poured, the beach is walked and secrets are revealed, each realizes there’s something they need or want to quit and together, they vow to do just that.

These friends might be fictional, but they felt like real-life cheerleaders, mentors and coaches and I bet they will for you, too. Consider this book to be the permission slip you’ve been waiting for.

My great-grandmother’s hope chest (with a handwrit My great-grandmother’s hope chest (with a handwritten note from my Nana inside!) was passed down to me and is currently in my basement holding some pretty powerful keepsakes.

THE HOPE CHEST by Viola Shipman made me want to dust it off, bring it upstairs, feature it in a prominent area of my home and start using it as a beacon for family connection and love.

In the book, Mattie, a woman nearing the end of her life, her husband, her new caregiver Rose and Rose’s daughter Jeri, come together in unexpected ways and create deep bonds as they encounter the items inside Mattie’s hope chest.

It’s heart-warming and heart-wrenching, grounded in the realities of life and buoyed by the hope that comes when we remember the good and stay grounded in the present with the people that matter.

Books make Mondays better! This week, I'm reading Books make Mondays better!

This week, I'm reading a book with the most delightful premise that typically goes against the advice of the times: quit something.

Here's the quick overview:

When four ride-or-die friends reunite for a getaway, they’re desperate for a break, a chance to reconnect. But each is hiding a deeper reason why. All their lives, they’ve encouraged each other not to give up—but they can’t do this anymore. Now, at a breaking point, they make a Quit.

Ah, I have a feeling this book is going to offer a big permission slip for readers to think of what they might need or want to quit in their own lives and I cannot wait to take this journey with these four friends, starting today.

What books are making your Monday better?

Rachel Linden has done it again! I have a special Rachel Linden has done it again!

I have a special place in my heart for her books and while I have loved them all, there’s just something about her latest book that won’t let go of my heart: A SPRINKLE OF SWEET SERENDIPITY.

I love frosting and sprinkles. I love serendipity and synchronicities. I love chocolate and chocolate shops. I love family and friends. I love personal growth and transformation.

This book brings it all and more.

Emmie has moved home after chasing her dream to a prestigious chocolatier school in France and is struggling to meet the demands of being a single mom, running the family business and being there for her friends and close-knit community. She’s waiting not-so-patiently for the big reveal: the magical vision that will reveal her purpose in life set to appear after she blows out the candle on her birthday. Her vision finally appeared this year, but it seems completely out of reach.

Until it isn’t.

Armed with a list and a container of sprinkles for courage, Emmie slowly moves forward to the life of her dreams, even though multiple mishaps, misunderstandings and unlucky breaks fight her every step of the way.

I won’t say any more so I do not spoil it for readers, but let’s just say I’ve renewed my enthusiasm for a good life list, I’ve made myself my own magical vial of sprinkles (see the picture!) and have flagged Dot’s pep talk for Emmie to repeat to myself because I need it too.

Oh, this book.

And now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go try Emmie’s recipe for fudge…and probably the sprinkle cookies, too!
