A Lit Life

Books That Bend Time

This collection of books bend time….and hearts. Each of these books alters time in some way: by going back, by imagining a new future and by hopping into another time and place. But these books do more than bend time…they bend our hearts, too. It’s nearly impossible NOT to reflect on how we might bend time ourselves if we could and that gives us all the feels.

Three More Months by Sarah Echvarre

Oh, what a powerful book this was. Echavarre introduces us to Chloe, a high-achieving workaholic who has let her work take over her life in multiple ways. Burdened with guilt at the lack of time she’s given her mother, she takes a day off of work to visit only to learn of her mother’s sudden death. Stricken with grief, she falls into a deep depression filled with regret over her misguided attention to work and not family (and as someone who works a bit too much, that hit me hard). But inexplicably, she wakes on the day of her mother’s funeral to find her mother in the kitchen, not a hair out of place. Questioning the reality of these turn of events, but grateful for another chance, she makes the decisions she should have made: helping her mother get healthier, spending time with family, repairing relationship rifts and getting her priorities straight. Then something happens that unravels Chloe yet again, but just might bring her peace in the end.

A Day Like This by Kelly McNeil

Oh. Oh. Oh. This book. A Day Like This by Kelley McNeil was a rollercoaster ride of emotions and a deep dive into what our minds are capable of. We meet Annie, a mother who seemingly has it all, but her idyllic life instantly crumbles in a car crash that leaves her grappling with a new life that she is certain is all wrong. As she struggles with her new reality as a newly-divorced, childless woman, she continually searches for the life she knows is out there somewhere deep in her memories. This book will make you think hard about the roads not taken, what truly matters most in life and the power of the mind that we might not understand the potential of. Until this book. If you loved What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty or Comfort & Joy by Kristin Hannah, then this book is for you.

One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle

This book, this book, this book. I originally borrowed it from the library and then I HAD to purchase it so I could read it again and again. It’s that good. Readers are transported to Positano, Italy as they follow Katy, a daughter who has lost her way after her mother’s death. Katy takes the vacation originally planned for two on her own to sort out her loss, her marriage and her life. She stays where her mother stayed, eats where her mother ate and takes in all the sights her mother spoke of before she passed. But she’s not alone. She unseemingly has reconnected with a younger version of her mother and she’s not wasting a second. This book not only gave me an escape to a magical town, it reminded me that second chances matter and every second of life is worth living and living well.

In Five Years by Rebecca Serle

Oh, my. This book. This book needs to be read. In a single sitting. With comfy pants. And a beverage. And some Kleenex. Maybe a life coach on stand-by, too. It’s incredible. In it, we meet Dannie, a high-powered young woman set to achieve all of her dreams in her 5 year plan: the job, the apartment, the man. But when she falls asleep after a dreamy night of getting engaged, she wakes up next to a different man in a different apartment 5 years into the future. And nothing is as planned. After one shocking hour, she awakes in her real life right on schedule. Except that nothing is on schedule anymore and she’s questioning every decision she thought she’d make for herself. This is a must read.

This middle grade novel blends mystery and a touch of time travel into a story about grief, friendship and the enduring bonds between generations. I hugged it when I was done reading it and the messages will stay with me for a long time.

Come listen as we talk about the personal connections Greg has to the story, the importance of writing real books with real issues for children, the important role the library plays in the book and why ALL readers need this book, even adult readers reading to their inner child. It’s that special.

Books make Mondays better! This week, I'm reading Books make Mondays better!

This week, I'm reading THE MEMORY LIBRARY by Kate Storey.

The book stole my heart in the opening pages where readers experience the connection between mother and daughter as they explore the world of books together.

Here's the publisher's summary:

For forty-two years, Sally Harrison has been building a library. Each year, on her daughter’s birthday, she adds a new book to her shelves – with a note in the front dedicated to her own greatest work.

But Ella – Sally’s only child – fled to Australia twenty-one years ago after a heated exchange, and never looked back. And though Sally still dutifully adds a new paperback to the shelves every time the clock strikes midnight on July 11th, her hopes of her daughter ever thumbing through the pages are starting to dwindle.

Then disaster strikes and Ella is forced to return to the home she once knew. She is soon to discover that when one chapter ends, another will soon follow. All you have to do is turn the page…

Incredible, right?!

Books make Mondays better! This week, I'm reading Books make Mondays better!

This week, I'm reading THE STATIONERY SHOP by Marjan Kamali.

Here's the opening summary from the publisher:

Roya, a dreamy, idealistic teenager living amid the political upheaval of 1953 Tehran, finds a literary oasis in kindly Mr. Fakhri’s neighborhood stationery shop, stocked with books and pens and bottles of jewel-colored ink.

Can you see why I chose it?! I'm about halfway in and while at first, I was taken with the idea of a book connected to a stationery shop, I'm completely connected to the compelling storyline that I've found myself living in.

So far, it's a story of love and loss, of family and found family, of new starts and learning. I know there's more to come, too.
